      It is an interesting site.

I do wonder about copyright issues though. That poemhunter.com lists itself as the publisher of the works of Eliot is going to come as rather of a surprise to Mrs. Valerie Eliot, who keeps very tight control of that estate. I'm sure that Macmillan is going to be rather surprised at Yeats's new copyright owner too.

I'm kidding, of course. You have a valid concern. Still, given the amount of poetry I consume, I'm going to avail myself of that material - particularly the stuff in the public domain.

This makes me think about ownership, of course, and the purpose of writing poems that aren't intended to be private. If the purpose is getting the poems to an audience, then I am most grateful for those poets who would put their work where I can get it --where the sharing is sometimes of greater concern to the writer than potential profits. I'm not saying the poets should make all their work available for free, but when the poet decides that a poem should be for the public right away, that is a touching gesture. That gesture allows me to enter the poem differently, maybe because of what I would take as the poet's sense of urgency in wanting to connect with the reader right away.
