The Poetry Foundation (publishers of Poetry Magazine) have published the results of a recent study that says that 90% of Americans value poetry and feel that it enriches their lives.

I will be interested to look more closely at their methodology, as I can say that this does not conform very closely to my experience. Still, this is nice news and I thought I'd pass it along.

Re: Most Americans Value Poetry, says study
Wed, April 19, 2006 - 1:26 PMAccording to the article, "a large majority of Americans feel poetry contributes to their understanding and appreciation of life and helps them to lead more engaged, satisfying lives."
This is certainly true for me! :) -

Thu, April 20, 2006 - 12:10 PMWow! That's an impressive list for "off the top of your head"!
A quick search on the internet brought up a few more names, many unknown to me: www.library.utoronto.ca/canpoe...oet.htm
(Even if Barnaby was only jesting [Geddy Lee! LOL!], it's still nice to get the names out there.) -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Most Americans Value Poetry, says study
Thu, April 20, 2006 - 12:17 PMThe list are only poets that I have actually read at least a few of their pieces, although I really love Babstock and Solie and have read all of their works.

Re: Most Americans Value Poetry, says study
Thu, September 28, 2006 - 7:03 AMI don't have any statistics to support this thought, but I think a good deal of that value attached to poetry comes from so many people writing poetry, and writing it out of times of emotional intensity. And of course, the poetry valued by that majority probably doesn't include the most demanding of the literary offerings which probably confound more than they "contribute to understanding." But poetry is that vehicle used to process what the senses take in, and since the senses are always taking in something, it makes sense to me that the images in poetry would be powerful. The images link directly to the busy senses.
